How Easy Is It to Work from Home?

Posted on 07 November, 2016 in Lifestyle

In today's modern age of technology, more and more Australians and people around the world are choosing to work from home, either for an employer that offers this flexible option or by going into work for themselves as an entrepreneur or freelancer. The Australian Bureau of Statistics reports that one out of 12 Australian workers do more work from home than any other location, with nearly one million people operating a home-based business. The work-at-home lifestyle does seem enviable with being able to set your own hours and lounge around in your pyjamas all day, but what exactly do you need to do to make this lifestyle dream your reality? Read on to find out.

Create a Home Work Space

If you are going to work from home successfully, you need to create an environment that is conducive to getting work done. While you don't need to have a formal office in your home, you do need to have a space that is dedicated to your work. It can be as simple as putting a desk in your rarely used guest room or converting a walk-in closet into a small office space. Make sure that your "office" has everything you need to do your work productively and without distractions. Let everyone in your home, like your spouse and kids, know that you are not to be disturbed when you are in your work area.

Schedule Working Hours

While one of the main appeals of the work-at-home lifestyle is its flexibility in choosing your own hours, you do still need to schedule those hours. Otherwise, you run the risk of getting easily distracted and procrastinating. Feel free to change up your schedule as often as you like to suit your personal preferences; just make sure you are allowing enough time to devote to getting your work done well and not at the last minute.

Remember to schedule breaks as well. It can be easy to get sucked into working and forget to get up to stretch or eat when you no longer have external signals, like your co-workers going out for lunch or leaving at the end of the day. Your brain needs time to refresh, so aim to take a break about once an hour, even if it is just to walk outside to pick up the post.

Don't Forget About the Rest of Your Life

Work-life balance is a common buzzword in the business world these days, and it is especially important for those who work from home and lack the daily social connection that comes from working with others. It can be easy to fall into the trap of communicating solely through text and emails, rarely having face-to-face contact.

Make time to meet up with friends for lunch or a yoga class, and don't neglect your personal hobbies. Just because you work at home doesn't mean you are on the job any time you are at home. Take time to relax and enjoy your favourite pastimes as well.
